FAQ

What is a reminiscence room?

A reminiscence room is a space, usually in a care home or hospital, decorated and furnished to evoke a period residents remember well: the furniture, wallpaper, objects, music and scents of their younger years, often recreated as a mid-century living room or kitchen.

For people living with dementia, whose older memories often stay vivid while recent ones fade, familiar surroundings and objects they can handle can prompt recognition, conversation and a settled sense of place. It is the environmental side of reminiscence therapy, and it works best when it is designed for everyday care, one-to-one time and small groups, rather than as a display.
