Sensory Room Design

FAQ

Can adults use sensory rooms?

Yes, and they always could: the multi-sensory approach began in adult care, in Dutch services for adults with learning disabilities in the 1970s. Today, sensory rooms support autistic adults and adults with learning disabilities in supported living, residents living with dementia, patients in mental-health and hospital settings, and increasingly, overwhelmed employees in neurodiversity-inclusive workplaces.

What changes for adults is the design rather than the principle: mature, dignified aesthetics instead of primary colours, controls that put the user fully in charge, and seating, fixings and layouts specified for adult bodies, mobility and support needs.
